It started as a rumour. It is confirmed that MultiChoice is considering broadcasting pornography and the possibility of creating new sex channels on DStv’s satellite pay-TV service. “MultiChoice has been inundated with requests for adult content on DStv over the past few months,” Jackie Rakitla, General Manager of corporate affairs at MultiChoice, told Die Burger on Tuesday. “At this stage we’re merely doing research to determine the extent of
interest in adult content, and we’re looking at the feasibility of
implementing such a service.” MultiChoice is using e-mails for
market research purposes to test the interest in various broadcasting
options, such as the broadcasting of “mixed pornography” (hardcore porn
between 21:00 and 05:00 and soft porn between 05:00 and 21:00),
hardcore porn 24 hours per day, or soft porn 24 hours per day on DStv
but Jackie said that a final decision has not yet been made on whether
MultiChoice will introduce an adult content service..

SOUTH AFRICA. In reaction to plans by MNET to add a porn channel to their bonquet, Spokesman for the Department of Home affair has descried it as ‘irresponsible’ .“We don’t want a society where pornography is readily available to children”, Spokeman Bayanda Mzoneli was reported to have said. MNET began considering the channel after a
number of request by some subscribers. However, The concern has been
protecting children from pornography.
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs
Malusi Gigaba also added his voice as he said a “clear relationship”
existed between pornography and the abuse of women and children.
“If launched, MultiChoice will ensure all the necessary safeguards are in place to prevent young viewers from accessing content of an
adult nature,” MultiChoice’s general manager of corporate affairs
Jackie Rakitla said.
There are also indications that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa would not be authorising the channel. Fingers
stay crossed.
